Maria Kallionpää (b.1981 in Ulvila) is an internationally active composer and pianist currently working on the final stage of her doctoral thesis on composition at the Oxford University, funded by AHRC and the Scatcherd European Scholarship. Kallionpää graduated from Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences in 2006 (piano/performing arts), from the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2009 (composition) where she won the Leverhulme Award, and in 2010 she completed a postgraduate composition course at the Univärsität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna. She has also studied composition, music technology and piano at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, as well as at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. Kallionpää`s music has been performed at various festivals such as Musica Nova Helsinki, Clapping Music (patroned by Steve Reich), Time of Music in Viitasaari and at the Spitalfields Festival in London. In 2011 Kallionpää won a final place at the Tenso European Chamber Choir Composition Competition and in the same year her work was also performed at the BBC singers workshop. Kallionpää´s commissioned composition and piano recitals were an official part of the Turku European Culture Capital 2011 program. In January 2010, Hommage a Schumann-Zusammenbinden. Winden? – an electroacoustic piece for piano by Kallionpää – was premiered at the Musikverein Hall in Vienna. Kallionpää was a composer in residence of the New England Children’s Choir 2008 and a visiting composer of the Via Nova Neue Musik von Thuringen festival 2007. She is a founding member of the Piano Now-ensemble of contemporary piano music, her works have been performed in the ensemble´s tours in East-Europe (2004) and Asia (2006).
