The Roots Bongo Band is an African – European couple, playing 'World Reggae' music. The band plays a combination of ‘Roots Pop Reggae’, ‘World Beat’ and traditional African music. On January 7th 2012 the band released their debut album ‘Leaders of Tomorrow’, reviewed as ‘Emotional, psychological and musical medicine for the masses. Wonderfully produced, fun, lively, and entertaining, very good album indeed, that will appeal to a wide range of reggae and world-music fans’ on Jamsphere Indie Music Magazine. The album was produced and recorded by the two lead singers JoeHero and NIna Beste in London, UK, before they relocated to The Gambia. In 2001 the band was initially formed as an acoustic set by self-taught musicians JoeHero (Joseph Mendy) and friends from The Gambia. In mid 2009 they met with vocalist Nina Beste who officially joined the band as one of the lead singers in 2010. Since early 2013 the band performs continually with Anthony Banya (drums), Domingos (keys), and Sito Ceesay (guitar). The band currently performs live in The Gambia where they opened their own venue ‘The Roots Bongo Bar & Restaurant’. The venue hosts Gambian Artists, and the band performs live every weekend. The Kombo Tour of 2013 took the band around the greater Banjul area where they performed free concerts to promote their debut album throughout the year. During the tour the band was granted promotional sponsorship for advertising, and a stage set up for one of their concerts by Gambia's largest GSM operator 'Africell'. After the tour the band reunited with former member Melody B, who had been the band's rapper before, and they have begun the production of new material together. The band is currently in the studio, also working on collaborations with other Gambian artists and on new single releases.
